BREAKING fast with steamboat dishes during Ramadan is certainly not a common dining option at a hotel.

Essence at Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur Hotel is presenting the “The All Stars Steamboat Affair”, which offers a new twist to steamboat and Ramadan buffets.

“We have four culinary maestros at Sheraton Imperial spearheading the team to bring a one-of-a-kind dining experience this Ramadan,” said executive chef Rajesh Kanna.

They are Malay kitchen junior sous chef Jamsari Mohamad, banquet sous chef Kabir Abdul Rahman, Villa Danieli restaurant chef de cuisine Alessandro Graziosi and Chinese banquet chef Vincent Loo.

While Essence retains its usual buffet layout with its Chinese corner, Italian corner and sushi bar, every table will also have a steamboat with several broth options available.

The spicy steamboat broths include asam pedas, tom yam and Nyonya curry, but diners may also choose chicken soto, Napoli beef or seafood.

Though the steamboat concept may be the highlight of this special Ramadan promotion, what the buffet line has to offer is nothing short of culinary artistry.

Even at first glance, the uniqueness of each dish hints at the amount of effort put into inventing them.

One of the must-have dishes is the Yemen Mandi Lamb Rice, which includes traditional dips and salad.

It was highlighted with good reason too, as the lamb is tender and cooked to perfection.

The Singaporean-style Red Bone Soup (sup tulang merah) is another dish that should not be missed. This salty crimson red soup made from lamb shank is surprisingly tasty and makes for a great appetiser.

Scallops are a popular dish at Chinese dinners and Loo’s Kowloon-style steamed half-shell scallop with black beans deserves a special mention for both taste and presentation.

Equally unique is the grilled sugarcane chicken salad, which comes with a delicious sweet dip.

Besides the international dishes, Essence has not forgotten Malay favourites, particularly in the desserts section.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with more than a dozen varieties of traditional Malay kuih including seri muka, kuih talam, onde-onde, dodol, tapai pulut daun getah and many more.

The All Stars Steamboat Affair Ramadan buffet is available until Aug 6, between 6.30pm and 10.30pm, and is priced at RM108++ per person, with special discounts for Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) members.
