TRADITIONAL dishes to usher in Chinese New Year are a must for many families, as it signifies good fortune, abundance and a great start to a new year.
With this in mind, Paradise Dynasty Chinese Restaurant is introducing the Paradise Fortune Pot (poon choi) to their Paradigm Mall and Bangsar Village II restaurants, in addition to an array of banquet-style set meals.
Poon choi is a traditional dish often served at religious or cultural festivals, with layers of ingredients, each with a significant meaning to usher in good luck and prosperity.
Paradise (F&B) Malaysia area head chef Leo Kam Seng Wa said the version at Paradise Dynasty incorporates 16 ingredients, including abalone, goose feet, fish maw, sea cucumber, scallop, prawns, Chinese dried oyster and pork belly.
“The dish is slow cooked for over two hours in a claypot to achieve maximum flavour,” said Kam, who has over 20 years of experience in the culinary field.
What differentiates it from other versions is the slight changes to the traditional poon choi, such as the use of goose feet to replace chicken feet.
The skin and cartilage of the goose feet fully absorb the flavour of the abalone broth, while the fish maw is cooked to tender perfection.
“We also use fresh white scallops as customers will get to taste the whole scallop. Dried ones usually break and fall apart into tiny pieces when stirred,” he said.
The Paradise Fortune Pot is priced at RM388++ for the regular size (four to six persons) and large at RM688++ (eight to 10 persons).
For those who prefer to enjoy it in the comforts of their own home, the regular size is also available for takeaway.
One of the notable dishes in the Happiness set is the Double-boiled Chicken Soup With Shark’s Fin.
Pork is used as a base ingredient for the soup, which is boiled for nine to 12 hours before more ingredients are added to it and boiled again. The result is a rich yet clear soup that is very flavourful.
Another must-try is the Crisp-fried Crystal Prawns With Salted Egg Yolk.
The huge river prawns are shelled, coated in salted egg yolk and fried to a crisp so that they are crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
Not to be missed as well at the restaurant is the Signature Eight-Flavoured Xiao Loong Bao, a popular item on the menu.
The colourful platter of dumplings comes in a steamer with flavours such as original, ginseng, foie gras, truffle, cheese, crab roe, garlic and Szechuan.
The delicate skin of the dumpling envelops the broth with juicy, tender pork meat on the inside.
Although cheese and truffle might sound like an unusual combination for Chinese cooking, the flavours were subtle and interesting, such as the Szechuan flavoured dumpling which uses peppercorn from the Szechuan province and has a spicy tang.
Creamy cheese oozed out of the cheese-flavoured dumpling with each bite.
Each serving of eight costs RM25.90. Alternatively, patrons can order a platter of six or 10 of their favourite flavours.
For banquet-style set menus, there are various options available, starting from the Lucky Set at RM388++ (four persons), Prosperity Set for RM598++ (five persons), Fortune Set for RM688++ (six persons), Healthy Set for RM898++ (10 persons) and Happiness for RM1088++ (10 persons).
All Chinese New Year set meal promotions will be running from now til Feb 16.
