FOR those who are unable to make it back home this Ramadan can head to Palm Garden Hotel in IOI Resort City, Putrajaya to experience a taste of home with a “Kampung Style” Ramadan Buffet.

Prepared by Malay chef Khairulnizar Abu Seman and a team of six enthusiastic cooks, the buffet offers authentic kampung fare for those wanting a taste of homemade food.

Expect traditional, well-loved favourites like ulam and kerabu (vegetable salads), curries and rendang in giant woks similar to ones used at kampung get-togethers.

The large bamboo rice steamers also bring back memories of delicious village cooking.

Chef Khairul recommends a few must-tries: Kambing Guling (roast lamb) marinated in special herbs and spices, and the Salmon Head Curry.

“We used salmon as it is soft yet compact. Other fish do not have such a good texture, so this makes our curry special,” he said.

Khairul has more than 16 years of experience as a Malay cuisine chef.

Other popular dishes include the Sup Ekor Mamak, Ayam Masak Kurma, Pajeri Terung and deep fried snapper with sweet and sour sauce.

End the meal on a sweet note with traditional Malay desserts such as the kuih lapis and Bubur Lambuk Durian.

Durian fans will love this thick, sweet porridge, as it is rich and
creamy without being overpowering, with a smooth consistency and chunks of durian flesh for that extra bite.

For those looking for variety, fret not as there will be international flavours at the buffet as well.

With six rotating menus,
diners will be spoilt for choice from more than 80 types of dishes.

The star attractions are the outdoor cooking stations.

Watch chefs in action as they prepare charcoal-grilled satay, ayam golek and ikan bakar over an open fire.

Snack on assorted fried items such as chicken liver, gizzard, fish eggs and squid.

If you love noodles, pick from your favourites at the noodle station, from Laksa Kedah to Western pasta.

There will also be fresh roti canai and murtabak prepared before your eyes at the hot plate counter.

Finally, diners will get to enjoy the meal while watching performances by the resident Mahligai Ghazal troupe.

The Ramadan Buffet will run until Aug 8 at Palms Cafe
and other restaurants at the hotel.

It is priced at RM75 ++ per adult and RM45 ++ per child.
