THERE aren’t many places that serve Taiwanese beef noodles that can be considered as affordable in the Klang Valley.

You either end up paying a bomb at specialty restaurants in malls or find eating places that serve something similar to this noodle dish.

Recently, my new friend Tristupe (who is an avid triathlon participant) recommended that I try the beef noodles at a stall in Section 14, Petaling Jaya, where he works.

It is a little hawker stall in the Medan Selera located next to the Digital Mall.

I had actually tried the beef noodles at this place even before Tristupe mentioned it.

I must say that in terms of value for money, this place wins hands-down.

A small bowl of beef noodles costs RM5 and the larger helping is priced at RM8. For a man with a Godzilla-sized appetite, I settled for large.

Now, taste-wise, the soup is rich in flavour and what I like is the ramen noodles that comes with it.

And no Taiwanese experience is complete without a dab of la yu (essence of chilli oil).

Many of my makan kaki complained that it was overpowering.

One of them is ‘Legs’ Wong, a cycling kaki of mine who said he had to refrain from the la yu because it burned his lips and tongue.

Heat factor aside, I must say that the Taiwanese beef noodles at the Medan Selera is awesome. On the Samo-scale, I would rate it at 8 out of 10.

There are also other dishes at the stall besides beef noodles.

If you love rice, there’s the La Chicken Drumstick rice and to me, the side order that came as a big surprise is the fried cheese dumplings.

The stall in Jalan Section 14/20, (GPS N 03 06.554, E 101 38.163) opens daily except on Saturdays and Sundays.

To those who drive, be advised that Section 14 in Petaling Jaya is one of the worst places to park.

Car pool or take the public transport. The nearest LRT station is Asia Jaya.
