BENTO meals are known to be healthy for its balanced portion of rice, meat, vegetables and fruits.

Based on Japanese customers? continued requests, Grand Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur is now serving bento meals for lunch.

Japanese specialty chef Nik Ahmad Noorman Syah, who has 16 years of experience in cooking Japanese food, and his assistants will prepare the bento boxes upon receiving an order, as everything has to be done fresh.

From the five varieties available, I only got to try one which was the Sushi Bento, comprising a creative combination of sushi, sashimi, California Roll, Nigri Sushi and Inari Sushi priced at RM38.

The sushi was slightly bigger than the usual portion served in most Japanese restaurants and was filling. However, I felt more slices of fish was needed in the sushi, so it would be proportionate to the amount of vinegared rice served.

Those who prefer chicken can opt for Tori Teriyaki Bento, RM29++. which is chicken baked and grilled with teriyaki sauce and served with rice.

The Sakana Bento, comprising grilled Salmon Teriyaki (which is rich in Omega-3 fatty acid) and rice is priced at RM35++.

Prawn lovers can try the Tempura Bento served with fresh prawns, deep-fried fish and greens coated with a crisp tempura batter and rice for RM28++.

The vegetarians also have their version of bento called Vegetarian Aki Bento, that comes with crunchy kakiage, tofu, California Rolls, Inari Sushi and grilled aubergine with miso for RM28++.

Each meal comes with chawanmushi, miso soup, pickles and mixed fresh fruits.

The traditional Japanese egg custard dish ? chawanmushi was soft and silky as you scoop it, and glides down the throat easily, leaving you wanting more. The simple but flavourful miso soup was tasty.

The preparation time for each bento box is about 20 minutes, so before you place the order, be sure that you can wait a while for the food to be served.

The bento meals are available on weekdays only from noon until 2.30pm. Promotion ends Sept 30.
