THERE is a treasure trove for food in Brickfields, one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest neighbourhoods, and if you visit the right places, chances are you might hit the jackpot.

Sometime back, a reader had e-mailed me about a pork noodles stall in a coffee shop opposite the Young Man’s Christian Association (YMCA) building.

His message read: “Dear Samo, you mentioned about Peter’s Pork Noodles at Mayflower food court near Jalan Berhala. Actually, there is another stall selling the same noodles near the YMCA.”

The guy later ranted about a family feud and that there was a split.

I find it hard to swallow such tales, especially from strangers.

Now, fast-forward to a recent trip to the neighbourhood where I rustled up my trusted makan kaki Eddie ‘Reel Tales’ Chua to try out this place.

For the record, we were regulars at Peter’s Pork Noodles who started his business in Peking coffee shop about one kilometer away from its present location.

Eddie and I used to work in Jalan Riong off Jalan Bangsar and took our lunch break in the coffee shop.

All it took was a bus ride to Sinar Kota supermarket and a short walk to the makan place.

So, after getting some pointers, we located Yit Sieang coffee shop at Jalan Tun Sambantan 4 and found the shop.

We spotted a familiar face, a middle-aged lady who used to take our orders at the Peking coffee shop.

There, she was in charge of cooking. Without hesitation, I ordered a bowl of Chee Yuk Fun with an additional poached egg.

“Torr teet chee yau char ah!,” (more pork cracklings please!) I told the lady who nodded back at me with a friendly gesture.

It was a short wait for the noodles to be served and I must say that for RM6.50 a pop (with added ingredients), this was one of the best Chee Yuk Fun I ever tasted.

So, on the Samo-scale, it would easily score a 8.5 out of 10.

Eddie and I were happy to be re-united with our old pork noodle seller and we have made it a point to visit this place regularly.

Yit Sieang coffee shop (GPS N 03 07 985, E 101 41 356) opens daily for lunch and the landmark to lookout for is the YMCA.

On the rail, you can take the KTM Komuter, ERL, LRT and Monorail to the KL Sentral station and this place is about 10-minutes walk away.
