SPICY food lovers, looking for a challenge? Take on the “Amazing Taste from the Kingdom of Thailand” food promotion held at the Checkers Cafe, Dorsett Regency Hotel Kuala Lumpur .

With two guest chefs flown in from Thailand, the authentic Thai food served at Checkers Cafe will definitely be a test for the trained taste buds of Malaysians.

Its executive chef K. K. Yau and guest chefs Chonticha Phochai and Den Fongkaew from Swissotel Le Concorde Hotel Bangkok whipped up a scrumptious buffet lunch at the launch of the promotion recently.

Yau said the promotion, which ends on Sunday, is held in conjunction with the Thai new year, Songkran.

“The chefs were specially invited to share the distinct taste of authentic Thai cuisine with Malaysians,” he said.

Among the main specialties of the promotion are Kaeng Kiew Wan Tai (Thai green curry chicken with eggplant), Phad Pla Priew Wan (stir fried Thai style sweet and sour fish) and Kung Thot Rat Sot Som (fried prawn with orange sauce).

Skillfully broiled using flavourful ingredients like green chilli paste, lemongrass, lime leaves, basil leaves and coconut milk, the green curry was thick and creamy with the right amount of spice.

Absorbing the bountiful spices, the chicken was juicy while the eggplant was full of texture and crunchy goodness.

Freshly stir-fried and topped off with thick sweet and sour Thai sauce, the seafood flew off the buffet platters and guests were left longing for more.

Those with steel taste buds for spicy food will find themselves grappling with the challenge of the Yam Mua Muang (young mango salad), tossed and mixed expertly on the spot by the chefs.

Savouring the first forkful, the crunchy salad left a zesty, tangy aftertaste. However, the taste slowly developed, getting spicier with each mouthful and eventually leaving guests with a lingering burning sensation in their mouths.

Some of the other salads served were the Yam Neaua Yang (grilled spicy beef salad), Yam Tou Poo (spicy wing bean salad), Yam Pla Dook Foo (deep fried catfish spicy salad).

Throughout the week, the cafe will serve alternate varieties of Tom Yam soup, such as the crowd favourite Tom Yam Kung (prawn Tom Yam soup), Tom Kha Kai (chicken soup with coconut milk and galangal) and Tom Ma Ra Yat Sai (boiled stuffed bitter gourd soup).

Noodle lovers will not be left out with a self-service Thai beef noodle soup counter, Thai Laksa and Thai style fried Kuey Teow.

Popular Thai desserts Khao Niew Ma (mango sticky rice), Tab Tim Krob (red ruby chestnut morsels in sweet coconut cream) and other varieties provide a sweet, refreshing end to an otherwise fiery meal.

The “Amazing Taste from the Kingdom of Thailand” buffet is priced at RM70++ per person for lunch and RM80++ for dinner.

Set up exclusively for cooking enthusiasts, a step-by-step cooking class will be conducted by the guest chefs today and tomorrow. Participants will learn how to cook Tom Yam Kung, Chiang Mai Curry, Thai spring rolls and Kao Tum Mud (sticky rice and bananas).
