HELLO folks!

This the last edition of the Food Trail for 2011 and I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy New Year.

Okay, looking back, this has been a very interesting year.

I have been to some cool makan places and also parted ways with some colleagues who were my makan kakis after they sought greener pastures.

And to all who have been following my column, a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for all the positive feedbacks and heads-up on new makan places.

Together, we can share your discovery.

As for the New Year that looms ahead, I will continue to search for good food in stalls, coffee shops and small restaurants in and around the Klang Valley.

Here’s a recap on some really cool finds in 2011…

SAMO’S TOP-FIVE FOOD TRAIL DISCOVERIES FOR 2011

AH YOKE KAMPUNG CHICKEN RICE

I stumbled upon this makan place in USJ 11, Subang Jaya after a recommendation from my colleague K. Rama. This family-run restaurant offers Hainanese-styled chicken rice as well as fishball noodles.

The pricing may be a bit high at RM7.50 per plate, but the excellent taste makes up for it. (GPS N 03 02 840, E 101 34 820)

MEGA CERIA NASI PADANG

My regular makan-kaki Billy Baharuddin made plenty of mention about a Nasi Padang shop operated by a family in Taman Maju Jaya near Kampung Medan in Petaling Jaya.

It turned out that his humble eatery offers one of the best Nasi Padang dishes in the township and I am proud to say that they serve cheap and good food! (GPS N 03 04 938, E 101 38 426)

THAI SHUE THOU

It’s not every day that you find a makan place that is built around a tree — especially in Petaling Jaya.

On a trip to a local bicycle shop in Sungai Way, I discovered an established restaurant serving Hakka Char Yuk Fan (braised pork) and deep-fried ikan kembung. This makan place ranks highly on the Samo-scale. (GPS N 03 05 197, E 101 37 304)

JIPUN CHAR KOAY TEOW

The very essence of the Food Trail is finding a good makan place and this involves travelling. One of highlights of this year is a Char Koay Teow shop in Banting, Selangor.

I found this with my folding bike kaki Melvin Tang and Kamo while exploring Morib and Tanjung Sepat. The shop offers Black Char Koay Teow which is rarely seen anymore in the Klang Valley. (GPS N 02 48 799, E 101 29 984)

GERAI NASI CAMPUR ALA

The hawker centre in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur yields plenty of good halal stalls. My buddy Billy and I found a gerai nasi campur offering a wide variety of good Malay food and the price was amazingly cheap! (GPS N 03 10 470, E 101 33 399).
