Vegetarian Hae Ko or Black Shrimp Paste


1 tbsp Marmite vegetarian yeast extract
1½ tsp castor sugar
4 tbsp maltose (mak nga tong)
1 tbsp thick soy sauce
2 tsp vegetarian belacan powder
120ml water

Thickening – (combined)
1 tbsp cornflour
2 tbsp water


Combine all ingredients in a non-stick saucepan and cook over low heat until it comes to a simmering boil for 1-2 minutes. Stir in thickening to mix.

    I tried the recipe below for Hae Ko from, it doesn’t turn out the same taste, can anyone let me know how to cook hae ko for Assam Laksa? Thanks

    1 tsp. creamy peanut sauce or to taste
    1 – 2 TBSP sugar or to taste
    1 TBSP maltose (mak nga tong) or to taste
    1 TBSP corn flour
    2 TBSP water
