THE month-long Jom Makan Bersama Ramadan buffet spread for the fasting season is back at The View Cafe, Best Western i-City Hotel with over 100 authentic Malay cuisines.

This year’s buffet celebrates all types of Malaysian dishes from north to south of the country.

A sample of what to expect was presented to guests and the media recently, where we savoured an array of appetisers like Kerabu Kacang Botol, Kerabu Taugeh dengan Kerang and Tauhu Sumbat with Sos Cili.

The mains focused on simple staples like Daging Masak Merah, Ayam Goreng Berempah, Kari Ikan Dengan Bendi, Wok-Fried Squid with Dry Chilli and Thick Soya Sauce, Sayur Nangka Masak Lemak Cili Padi, Siew Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce and Egg Foo Yong.

The Daging Masak Merah came in small cubes sizes making it easier to break apart when eating it.

If you are looking for something soupy to start your meal with, the soup section will offer choices like Sup Ayam Berempah, and the must have Ramadan speciality of bubur lambuk is placed nearby.

As I am not a big fan of kerabu, I headed for the main dishes.

Instead of white rice, tomato rice was my choice as this is something I do not have every day.

When one opts for tomato rice, the dishes that complement it have to be something sweet yet spicy at the same time.

I was glad the chef prepared several dishes to balance out the flavours.

The Daging Masak Merah, had beef in small cubes making it easier to break apart when eating it.

Though some parts appeared chewy, it was nonetheless appetising and had hints of spice in each bite.

The easy to chew on Wok-Fried Squid with Dry Chili and Thick Soya Sauce looked harmless but it was actually quite spicy.

Fried chicken is a personal favourite and the well-seasoned and crispy fried chicken served by the chef was rich in flavour and simply toothsome.

The remaining dishes of Egg Foo Yong and Siew Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce are simple home-cooked meals every Malaysian has, once in a while.

The highlight for Ramadan is the smooth and tender roast lamb.

It is advisable to head to the outdoor dining area for this before the crowd comes in and a queue builds up.

This year’s Ramadan spread is prepared by executive chef Muhammad Haikal Vishan Pathair.

This is his first Ramadan with the cafe and he has eight menus on rotation throughout the fasting month.

“There is no theme for this buffet spread. We are providing a wide range of dishes from all over Malaysia,” he said.

He will be adding in his own version of nasi Arab and shawarma.

The buffet will also feature a variety of Malaysian hawker food, kebab and desserts.

Some of the sweets at the dessert counter include marble cheese cake, carrot cake, orange creme caramel and assorted Malay kuih and ice kacang.

The Ramadan buffet is available until July 3 and is served from 7.30pm to 10.30pm.

It is priced at RM88 nett per adult and RM44 nett per child (aged 11 and below) and for senior citizens.

The hotel is offering an early-bird promotion ending June 12, where guests will only need to pay RM75 nett. Advance reservation is encouraged.
