CRAVING for gourmet cakes but do not want to burn a hole in your pocket?

Or how about the taste of fresh cream and scent of sweet smelling vanilla when you walk into a patisserie in France?

If your answer is ‘yes’, then head over to a quaint little cafe called Pastryville located on the high street of Hartamas Shopping Centre.

With quirky motivational and sweet quotes framing the walls, this five-month-old eatery promises patrons nothing but pastries, cakes and even bread, that is reminiscent of France.

“Our pastries and cakes are European- inspired, such as the Earl Grey cheesecake and the Mont Blanc or even the Arabica cake,” said owner and founder Alex Hoi Kong Fei.

His main chefs had undergone training to make French pastries, said Hoi, adding that cakes and pastries were made from scratch.

This includes the jams, custard and fresh cream which are made fresh at Pastryville’s kitchen every day.

“Even to get the right kind of cheese was a challenge.

“I think I sampled 2,000 Mont Blanc cheesecakes made by our chefs before we found the right one,” he said.

Among the pastries that Pastryville is famous for is the cream puff, which is made in small quantities.

Every day, our chefs whip up only about 200 pieces per batch to ensure their freshness.

“Usually all cream puffs are sold out on a daily basis. They sell like hotcakes especially among our Japanese customers, who live nearby,” he said.

Pastryville serves raisin scones as part of their three-tier high tea stand, along with a selection of cakes, tarts and breads together with two black coffees or tea for RM45.

Not a big eater? Not a problem as the scones are served individually, with homemade jam and fresh cream.

We found the scones to be flavourful but a little dry.

We were told that it is made this way as they are meant to be eaten with jam and cream.

Hoi, who is in this business with two other partners, has a passion for food especially the concept of high tea.

“From our survey, we found out that there are over 400 bread stores in the Klang Valley but there isn’t one pastry shop or gourmet cake shop,” he said.

Pastryville has slowly but surely gained popularity as over 500 pieces of pastries and bread get snatched off the rack every day.

Hoi even gets regulars calling to reserve cakes and cream puffs for functions and parties.

Among the favourites are the Maple Syrup Pillow, which resembles a six-inch wide cinnamon roll.

Pastryville’s Black Pepper Chicken made out of charcoal bread is also a huge hit.

Diners are recommended to warm it up a little before eating at home to bring out the flavour of the black pepper chicken further.

Also on the menu are Tom Yam Bread, Purple Yam Bread and Green Tea Doughnut.
