TASTE the flavours of the world at the Gourmet International Buffet Dinner of Spoon Cafe in G Hotel Kelawai, Penang.
Served every Friday and Saturday between 6.30pm and 10.30pm, the buffet offers an eclectic assortment of delicacies from various cuisines.
Star of the show is the Portuguese Fresh Seafood BBQ Grill section where diners can choose their preferred marine morsels and have them served with a thick and fiery sauce.
Depending on what is freshly available on the day, options may include prawns, squid, seabass, barramundi (siakap), catfish, mackerel, stingray, crabs or slipper lobsters.
The crustaceans are great when flamed over coals while the more delicate fishes are best when cooked inside banana leaves and foil which impart a unique flavour.
“Grilled seafood is a typical Portuguese dish and very popular in Malacca. The key element is the sauce which we make ourselves.
“Penangites will love this fusion of spicy and sour flavours,” said executive sous chef Ong Ban Khoon, who worked in Malacca a few years ago.
But before having the seafood, hit the appetiser section brimming with vibrant selections of salads, cheeses, seafood on ice and cold cuts with condiments and more.
Japanese food aficionados will enjoy the varieties of fresh sashimi and sushi to go with a dash of wasabi, shoyu and pickles.
Warm up with bowls of soup, then visit the main dish lineup for treats like Thai Squid Cake infused with traditional herbs and spices to go with chilli dip.
Also from the Land of Smiles is Massaman Beef Curry, which has a rich taste thanks to coconut milk and texture from crunchy peanuts and potatoes.
Those who like western food will like the Fried Chicken which has a golden brown crust hiding juicy meat. The accompanying Wasabi Mayo complements it well.
Tuck into the Savoury Stuffed Oysters topped with pungent cheese, Greek-inspired Spinach and Mushroom Pie, and flavourful Chicken Chorizo with Gnocchi a la Romaine, among others.
Possible items at the carvery section include succulent Roasted Lamb Leg or a moist banana leaf-wrapped delicacy which is the Pes Pes Seafood Roll.
Otherwise, visit the action stations to have the chefs cook the famous Penang Char Koay Teow, Chicken or Beef Satay and your preferred pasta dish, to order.
Leave some room at the end for scrumptious desserts like Steamed Pumpkin Custard, Charcoal Sandwich, assorted types of Macaron, Mini Fruit Tartlets and several flavours of gelato with your choice of toppings.
The sophisticated yet cosy French bistro-like ambience of Spoon Cafe, located on Level 2 of the hotel, provides a wonderful setting for your feast.
Admire the Peranakan-motif tiles, wooden furniture and stylish pendant lights. The windows offer expansive views of the neighbourhood and distant hills.
