KLANG Valley denizens hankering for some specialities from the Middle East are in luck because you will not have to go far.

Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur is bringing the Middle Eastern Affair to Malaysians. Guests have the option to enjoy the choices off the ala carte menu at Chatz Brasserie, Hot Gossip, Klix Lounge or Pool Bar.

The menu for the promotion available until Oct 31, features almost 40 items, all thoughtfully selected by guest chef Ayman Ibrahim.

If you have a hard time deciding, there is a four-course set menu to make things easier.

Some of the appetisers people can look forward to include Warq Einab, Taboulah and Falafel.

Some of the appetisers people can look forward to include Warq Einab, Taboulah and Falafel.

During a recent sampling of the menu, we started off with appetisers of falafel (chickpea croquettes served with tahinah, which is a sesame paste), hummus, taboulah (parsley and mint salad tossed with bulgur wheat) and warq einab (rolled vine leaf with rice).

Personal favourites from the quartet were the taboulah and falafel.

Although slightly salty, the salad was a refreshing start to the meal with its tomatoes, generous serving of chopped parsley and lemon. The bulgur wheat added an interesting texture to the dish.

While many would be familiar with the popular street snack of falafel, having gained popularity here over the past few years, Ayman made his with a little twist.

He added a small amount of coriander seeds to make the flavours intriguing, as well as a sprinkling of sesame seeds on top for added crunch.

“Someone who uses too much spice or sauces does not know how to cook,” Ayman opined.

Seafood lovers should try the Jambary Mashwi (Grilled Prawns with Saffron Sauce).

True to his statement, most of his dishes are presented with minimal fuss and as close to its original state as possible.

For the main courses, the kofta (barbequed lamb meatballs), Shish Tawook (skewered chicken cubes) and Bamiah Bil Lahm Ejal (stewed okra with beef and tomato) (top pic) are a good place to start.

The Shish Tawook tastes similar to the North Indian dish of tandoori chicken, but grilled over an open flame and served in smaller chunks.

For seafood options, there’s the Samak Mashwi (panfried salmon fillet glazed with tahinah) and Jambary Mashwi (grilled prawns with saffron sauce).

For dessert, there’s a selection of popular Middle Eastern delights including assorted baklava, basosah (semolina cakes) and kashul or almond pudding.

The four-course Middle East Specialties set menu is priced between RM85 nett and RM88 nett depending on the main dish chosen.
