Recipe Description

In this ‘Malaysian Beef Recipes’ series, this Daging Masak Merah recipe has the balance of sweet and spicy, combining the best of both worlds. 

Recipe Ingredient

  • 200g striploin (cut into slices)
  • 2Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • water
  • 1tsp cumin powder
  • 1tsp coriander powder
  • 3tsp corn flour
  • Blended Spice Paste:
  • 2nos garlic
  • 1nos serai (bruised and sliced thinly)
  • 2cm ginger (sliced thinly)
  • 1Tbsp chili paste/cili giling
  • 1/2nos big onion (chopped roughly)
  • 1nos tomato (cut into wedges)
  • Others:
  • 1nos tomato (cut into wedges)
  • 1tsp sugar
  • salt , to taste
  • black pepper
  • 4Tbsp oil
  • 4Tbsp tomato sauce
  • 1/2cup water

Instructions

  1. To remove the gaminess of the beef, mix in 2Tbsp of all-purpose flour, and some water till it forms a thick batter. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, prepare the ingredients for blended spice paste. Blend till smooth and set aside.
  3. Once 30 minutes is up, rinse the beef and drain the excess water. Marinate with a pinch of salt and pepper followed by cumin, coriander powder and corn flour.
  4. In a pan, heat up the 4Tbsp of oil and fry the marinated beef for about 1 minute. Drain excess oil and set aside.
  5. Using the same pan and oil, fry the blended spice paste for about 4-5 minutes of till fragrant.
  6. Subsequently add the 1/2 cup of water, tomato sauce and tomato wedges followed by the fried beef slices. Season with sugar and some salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Let it cook for another 2-3 minutes and its ready to be served. Enjoy!
