THERE is a makan place in SS14, Subang Jaya that serves steamed ayam kampung.

Its called Tien Tien restaurant and the person who told me about this outlet was my former colleague K. Ramasegar.

But before I go on, let me wish Rama a ‘Happy Retirement’.

Okay, now lets get back to the food.

I was told the chicken served at the restaurant is from Kuala Lipis in Pahang and that these birds are sold at a premium price.

Eh Sam ah! Have you tried this kampung chicken place in SS14 ah?,” asked Ramasegar.

My reaction was a blank face.

But when he explained about the tasty fowl that came from his hometown of Kuala Lipis, I was convinced to give it a try.

I went to Tien Tien to sample their kampung chicken and ordered half a portion of the chicken.

It was steamed and came with two side-dishes — fishball soup and fried bittergourd.

The vegetable dish was decent but the soup, well, I won’t be asking for seconds.

As for the kampung chicken dish, I must say the preparation style reminded me of the good old days when my paternal grandmother would occassionaly serve salt-steamed chicken for dinner.

This traditional Hakka-style dish is a standard and the one served at Tien Tien tastes almost like what my granny used to give us.

Quality-wise, the steamed kampung chicken with herbs would rate a six out of 10 on the Samo-scale.

Half a chicken costs RM33. This may be a bit pricey but it is definitely worth a try.

Tien Tien Restaurant (N 03 03 968, E 101 35 182) opens for lunch and dinner and is located off Jalan SS14/1 and is not hard to find.

The Subang Jaya assemblyman’s office is located directly above the restaurant.
