Travelling to Ipoh is made easy by the KTMB ETS service from 6am to 9pm and a single-journey ticket costs RM35.

You can book your passage online via KTMB’s portal or purchase an ETS ticket from the railway company’s main stations around the country.

I made a trip to Ipoh recently to conduct a workshop for folding bike enthusiasts and made it a point to visit Loke Wooi Kee coffeeshop for three things — ice cream soda, fruit rojak and a bowl of ngau lam meen (ox-tripe noodles).

Cycling works up a good appetite and the makan experience is even more awesome if you have some buddies to share the food with you.

The house favourite is the ice cream soda drink.

Let’s start with the special icy treat of ice-cream soda served with ice cream and red syrup (RM3.50).

It is normally served with vanilla ice-cream. Some patrons may also prefer Sprite with the ice-cream.

Once the concoction of three flavours blend, what you get is a smooth consistency.

Next, there’s the fruit rojak.

At RM7.50 for a large portion, this is one of the best snacks in town.

There’s a mixture of buah kedondongjambu madusengkuang or turnip, raw mango and pineapple.

A superb combination of blended groundnut and rojak sauce.

The rojak sauce mixed with crushed roasted ground nuts is a killer combination.

Last, but not least, there’s the Ngau Lam Meen (RM5.50) that is worth trying.

Highly-recommended is the Ngau Kann Yuen (beef tendon balls) that sell out very fast.

You can also order the beef noodles with ox-tripe and tendons.

Loke Wooi Kee coffee shop (N 4°35’42.5”, E 101°05’01.6”) opens for lunch and breakfast daily (closed on certain Chinese festivals) and is located off Jalan Raja Muda Aziz in Ipoh.
