DESPITE taking up his posting at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa in Petaling Jaya only two months ago, master chef Lee Yew Ken had no trouble whipping up an extensive menu for West Lake Garden’s Chinese New Year promotion.

“I spent a two-year stint in Japan, where it was quite common for me to prepare Chinese dishes on the spot, based on customers’ requests such as preferred ingredients or budget,” said the 39-year-old who also drew on his decade-old experience as a chef specialising in Cantonese cuisine.

In accordance with tradition, diners will kick-start their meal by tossing Lee’s Prosperous Yee Sang for a better year ahead.

The Prosperous Yee Sang, which is also available for takeaway in half and full portion, come in varieties such as Prosperity Abalone and Salmon Yee Sang, King Pu with Hokkaido Scallop Yee Sang, and Pollen with Shellfish and Prawn Yee Sang, as well as vegetarian options such as Prosperity Snow Pear with Vegetarian Prawn Yee Sang and Prosperity Mixed Salad with Fresh Fruit Yee Sang.

To celebrate the Year of the Dragon, West Lake Garden is offering a choice of four lavish menus (for a table of 10) to choose from.

The opulent Diamond Dragon menu, priced at RM2,012++, begins with the King Pu Boston Lobster Yee Sang, followed by the Monk Jumped Over the Wall with Truffle Mushroom Soup.

The next few dishes are the Braised Eight Headed Abalone with Black Moss, Baked Drunken Village Chicken, Ying Yang Estuary Garoupa in Claypot, and Deep Fried King Tiger Prawn with Pumpkin Sauce.

The meal ends with the Braised Yee Fu Noodle with Lobster Claw, as well as the Chinese New Year Sweet Fancy Duet, and Sweetened Coconut with Almond Cream and Hasma for desserts.

The Chinese New Year Sweet Fancy Duet features Nian Gao coated with dessicated coconut and Mini Snowskin Pumpkins with red bean filling.

Diners who opt for the Golden Dragon menu will start their meal with the King Pu with Hokkaido Scallop Yee Sang and Double Boiled Superior Shark’s Fin Soup with Japanese Scallop and Fish Maw.

Following these dishes are the Deep Fried Crispy Ying Yang Chicken, Braised Eight Headed Abalone with Black Moss, Dried Oyster and Cabbage, Steamed Estuary Garoupa with Shredded Ginger and Dried Fruit Peel, Steamed Freshwater Prawn with Garlic and Glass Noodle, and Claypot Rice with Waxed Duck and Mushroom.

Desserts come in the form of the Chinese New Year Sweet Fancy Duet, and Sweetened Lotus Paste with Lily Bulb and Glutinous Rice Dumpling.

The Silver Dragon menu features Bee Pollen Yee Sang with Shell Fish and Prawn, Double Boiled Shark’s Fin Soup with Truffle Mushroom, Smoked Village Chicken, Hong Kong-Style Steamed Estuary Garoupa, Wok-Fried King Prawn with Golden Garlic, Braised Black Moss with Dried Oyster, Fish Maw, Mushrooms and Vegetables, Fried Rice with Waxed Meat, Shrimp and Chicken Floss, as well as Chilled Snow Pear Syrup with Kwai Fa Sea Coconut and Nian Gao for desserts.

The Bronze Dragon menu offers Salmon Fresh Fruit Yee Sang, Braised Shark’s Fin with Bamboo Pith, Dried Scallop and Crab Meat, West Lake’s Ying Yang Roasted Chicken, Steamed Cod Fish with Pickled Vegetable, Wok-Fried Sea Prawn with Chef’s Special Sauce, Braised Black Moss with Mushroom, Fish Maw and Vegetables, Steamed Rice with Waxed Duck and Waxed Meat, as well as Chilled Aloe Vera and Nian Gao for desserts.

The Golden Dragon, Silver Dragon and Bronze Dragon menus are priced at RM1,688++, RM1,388++ and RM1,188++ respectively.

Lee’s personal recommendation is the variety of soups, which are filled with ingredients symbolic for a prosperous and healthy year ahead.

The set menus are available for lunch and dinner from Jan 8 till Feb 6.

Diners who do not favour set meals can opt for West Lake Garden’s a la carte menu.

In addition, dishes like Dragon Boat Sea Cucumber with Eight Treasures, Roasted Duck with BBQ and Chilli Sauce, Roasted Chicken Five Spices Powder and Chilli Sauce, and Steamed Glutinous Rice with Waxed Meat in Lotus Leaf are available for takeaways from the hotel’s gourmet counter.

Lunch is served from noon to 2.30pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 2.30pm on Sundays and public holidays.

Dinner is available from 6pm to 10.30pm daily.
