JUST when I thought I have seen it all in terms of cheap Japanese food, my wife Michelle told me about a makan place in USJ 10, Subang Jaya.

The restaurant is called Sukiya and specialises in Gyudon (beef slices and rice) and Donburi (rice in a bowl with vegetables and meat) dishes.

Well, since I am a meat lover, I went with my wife to the new makan place to give it a try.

The set-up at this restaurant is simple. It is a fast food joint with dine-in or takeaway options and the prices are pretty reasonable.

You can order a bowl of small Gyudon at RM7.90, the medium serving is RM9.90 and the large portion costs RM11.90.

Now, apart from the beef dish, you can add side dishes like the karage (fried chicken cutlets) for an additional charge of RM6.

Taste-wise, I would say the quality of the food served here is up to my expectations.

So, I wasted no time in ordering a Kimuchi Gyudon (beef bowl with kimchi). Michelle hates kimchi with a vengeance.

Having tasted the mix, the beef slices blended well with the sour fermented cabbage and for that, I rate Sukiya’s Gyudon six out of 10 on the Samo-scale.

What I like is the green chilli sauce that you can add to the beef slices and that goes very well with the hot rice.

Other than the Gyudon, there are other dishes like the Japanese curry and Donburi dishes with chicken cubes and eggs.

The fast food style and concept is something that I can accept because the dishes are delivered to you on a tray immediately after you pay.

And for the record, Sukiya, which is owned by a public-listed company called Zensho in Japan, has more than 1,000 chain stores in the country.

This makan place is located at Jalan USJ 10/1H in Subang Jaya, Selangor and is open from 7am to 11pm.
