Recipe Ingredient

  • 140g butter
  • 100g black treacle
  • 110g golden syrup
  • 50g castor sugar
  • 150ml evaporated milk
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 75g sultanas
  • Combine and sift:
  • 225g plain flour
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda


  1. Line and grease a loaf tin. Preheat oven to 150 ºC.
  2. Combine butter, treacle, golden syrup and sugar in a heavy saucepan. Heat gently to dissolve all the ingredients. Add the milk, stir to blend, then leave to cool completely.
  3. Stir in eggs and blend until mixture turns smooth. Fold in sifted dry ingredients and mix well. Stir in sultanas.
  4. Turn mixture out into loaf tin and bake in preheated oven for one-and-a-half to two hours or until cake is cooked when tested with a skewer. Cool cake on a wire rack before turning it out.
